Hamby and the Hillcats Hammer St. Gregory's

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Rogers State needed just 10 innings to complete a doubleheader sweep over St. Gregory's Monday afternoon in Shawnee, Okla.

Senior Zach Hamby led an offensive showcase by the Hillcats that included 33 runs on 32 hits. RSU scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning of the opener to post a 14-1 victory, then tallied 10 runs in the third inning of the nightcap en route to a 19-2 thrashing.

Hamby finished the afternoon 6-for-8 with two home runs, two doubles and eight RBI. The Hillcats clubbed seven homers on the day to complete a three-game series sweep of the Cavaliers.

GAME ONE

Hamby belted a home run in the top of the first inning to set the tone for the afternoon. Rob Rodriguez added a two-run blast in the second to put the Cats in front, 4-0. Hamby, Rodriguez and Luis Caraballo each cranked doubles as part of a seven-run fifth inning.

RSU starter Randy Jones (2-1) allowed just one run over the first four innings to record the win. Curt Simpson tossed a scoreless fifth inning to complete the run-rule victory.

Hamby went 3-for-3 with five RBI while Rodriguez and Coby Wright added two hits apiece.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats scored four times in the first inning and then exploded for 10 runs in the third to complete the sweep in dominating fashion.

Caraballo ripped his first long ball of the season to start the third inning. Travis Harold followed with a two-run bomb just two batters later. Ryan Littlejohn capped the inning with a deep fly in his second at-bat of the inning. The Cats sent 15 hitters to the plate before the inning mercifully ended on a popup.

Josh Phillipi (3-1) became the first RSU starter to post his third victory of the season with four solid innings on the hill. The freshman allowed one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Joe Hardzog worked the fifth frame to finish off the Cavs.

Hamby and Harold posted three hits while Wright, Caraballo, Littlejohn and Mitch Guemmer each had two. RSU finished with a season-high 19 hits despite using only five at-bats.

Rogers State (16-9, 5-7) ran its winning streak to six games with the sweep. The Hillcats will return to Shawnee Thursday for the first game of a pivotal series against Oklahoma Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
