Baseball Cats Take Series from Bison with Saturday Split

CLAREMORE, Okla. - After being shutout in the opening game Saturday Rogers State exploded for 14 runs and run-ruled Oklahoma Baptist in the nightcap to complete a 2-1 series victory at the Hillcat Complex.

The Hillcats rallied for an 8-6 victory in the first game of the series played Thursday evening in Shawnee. OBU scored three runs in the final two innings to edge the Cats, 3-0 in Saturday's opener. RSU answered with 14 runs on 14 hits to claim the final game of the series, 14-4.

GAME ONE (Thursday)

RSU scored two runs in each of the final two innings to post a hard-fought 8-6 victory in the series opener.

Senior Zach Hamby ripped a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 lead for the Hillcats. Ryan Littlejohn led off the top of the ninth with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rob Rodriguez. Singles by Travis Harold, Coby Wright and Hamby tacked on an insurance run to make it 8-6.

Chad Dawkins doubled to start the bottom of the ninth and scored on a sacrifice fly before RSU reliever Josh Walker (3-1) slammed the door. Dawkins was the only Bison to score against Walker over three innings of stellar relief. He picked up the win after allowing one run on one hit with two strikeouts.

Grant Cosby worked the first six innings for the Hillcats, giving up five runs, two earned, on nine hits. Hamby and Brandon Denton tallied three hits apiece for RSU. Ryan Stavert took the loss for the Bison.

GAME TWO (Saturday)

Bison starter Tyler Duran tossed a seven-inning complete game to give OBU a 3-0 victory in Saturday's opener.

Duran and RSU starter Randy Jones were locked in a pitcher's duel until the Bison finally broke through in the top of the sixth. Jones allowed just two hits over the first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth.

Billy Jarka led off the sixth with a single to left and Matt Welch followed with a single to right. Dawkins plated Jarka with a fielder's choice groundout to give OBU a 1-0 lead. Victor Manzano and Justin Trejo opened the seventh inning with back-to-back bunt singles and both eventually scored on a two-out single by Billy Thomas.

The Hillcats put runners on the base paths in each of the first six innings but were unable to plate a single run. Junior Luis Caraballo ripped two of the Cats five hits in the contest.

Jones (2-2) was tagged with the loss despite a solid effort. He allowed three runs on three hits while working a complete game. Duran (5-1) earned his fifth win of the year while racking up six strikeouts.

GAME THREE (Saturday)

RSU exploded for 14 runs in the rubber match to claim the series with a 14-4 run-rule win in the nightcap on Saturday.

The Hillcats appeared to be in trouble after falling behind 4-0 in the second inning. However, RSU responded with five runs in the bottom of the second and added four more in the third.

Josh Callazo belted a three-run double with two outs in the top the second inning to stake the Bison to a 4-0 advantage. Joe Manbodh started the bottom of the inning with a single and later scored on a single to left by Caraballo. Rodriguez and Denton added singles and Wright laced a two-run double to give the Cats a 5-4 lead.

Blake Kelley opened the third with a double and Littlejohn followed with a two-run double two batters later. Andy Gonell plated a run with a single to right and Wright capped the five-run inning with an RBI single to left.

Manbodh wrapped a homer around the left field foul pole to start the fourth and RSU added four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to reach the run-rule. Caraballo's walk-off single up the middle scored Mitch Guemmer from second base to reach 10-run rule.

Curt Simpson (1-0) tossed three innings of scoreless relief to record his first victory of the season. Spencer Hylander (3-1) suffered his first loss for the Bison after being chased from the game after recording just five outs.

Wright, Manbodh, Caraballo, Rodriguez and Gonell each tallied two hits for the Hillcats.

Rogers State (18-10, 7-8) won its third conference series of the season by taking 2-of-3 from OBU. The Hillcats will host Tabor College in a non-conference doubleheader Monday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
