SHAWNEE, Okla. - A sharp shooting individual performance propelled Rogers State to a 75-65 road victory over St. Gregory's Saturday night in Shawnee, Okla.
Sophomore Hunter Peterson set a team record with seven 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points. She connected on 7-of-8 shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Peterson didn't waste any time in her display of 3-point proficiency. She knocked down three treys and accounted for all of RSU's points over the first five minutes of the game.
The Hillcats took advantage of the sophomore guard's shooting clinic by gaining the lead in the first five minutes of play and holding it throughout the remainder of the game.
Junior point guard Autumn Thompson registered seven assists on the evening while also recording 11 points for Coach Amy Williams' squad. Thompson handled the ball well with only one turnover as the Hillcats finished with just 12 total turnovers. Katie Rice scored 12 points to join Peterson and Thompson as the only Hillcats to score in double figures.
RSU spoiled Senior Night festivities for the Lady Cavs with the victory. SGU did benefit from solid play from the departing players. Senior Abby Wolf finished with 10 points while fellow senior Nkechi Okorie tallied nine. The Cavaliers were led in scoring by Jalisa Howard with 19 points while forward Sunni Hill chipped in 13 points in the loss.
The Hillcats capitalized on free throws by hitting 82 percent on 14-of-17 shooting. SGU shot 69 percent on 11-of-16 shooting from the charity stripe. RSU distributed the ball well with 15 assists on 25 field goals made in the game. The Lady Cavs outrebounded the Hillcats, 40-27 but SGU shot just 29 percent from 3-point land. The Hillcats hit 49 percent of their 3-pointers.
Rogers State (17-13, 11-11) completed the regular season with a sixth place finish in the Sooner Athletic Conference. The Hillcats will face Northwestern Oklahoma State in the first round of the conference tournament Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas. Game time will be announced Sunday afternoon.
