Sooners Topple RSU Women, 94-53

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma Sooners displayed midseason form Wednesday night as they cruised past Rogers State, 94-53 in exhibition action at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Okla.

In their first game action since reaching the Final Four last March, the Sooners raced out to a 28-2 lead over the first eight minutes. Nyeshia Stevenson and Whitney Hand combined for 20 points and four 3-pointers during the early scoring barrage. Hand led all scorers with 27 points while Stevenson finished with 19.

Sophomore Brittani Smith sparked a 15-2 run by the Hillcats to climb back to within 13 points of the Sooners. However, OU closed the half on a 9-0 run capped by Stevenson's fifth trey of the period at the buzzer. The Sooners shot 58 percent in the first half, including 10-of-17 from 3-point range.

After building a commanding lead, Coach Sherri Coale's club outscored the Hillcats by only three points in the second half. Andrea Miles poured in 10 of her team-high 12 points for RSU in the second stanza. No other Hillcat player reached double figures. Smith tallied seven points while Jenny Hardin, Yoda Woods and Logan Froese each contributed six points.

OU capitalized on 24 RSU miscues with 43 points off turnovers. The Sooners didn't ease off the gas pedal until late in the second half. The home team continued to press and trap defensively while three of five starters played at least 22 minutes. OU enjoyed a 45-35 rebounding advantage and shot 50 percent from the floor for the game.

Candice Stewart led the way for RSU on the glass by hauling in nine rebounds. Woods finished with eight boards, including four on the offensive end. Hand and Amanda Thompson paced the OU women with eight rebounds apiece.

Rogers State will officially tip-off the regular season Saturday afternoon against Central Christian College. The Hillcats will celebrate their third annual homecoming with a tailgate party in the Expo Center parking lot beginning at 11 a.m. The women's game is scheduled for 2 p.m. followed by the men's contest at 4 p.m.
