Hillcats Club Mustangs Twice Monday

CONWAY, Ark. - Rogers State made quick work of Central Baptist College with two run-rule victories over the Mustangs Monday in Conway, Ark.

The Hillcats tallied 31 hits in the two-game sweep, winning by scores of 17-5 and 13-0. RSU swatted seven home runs on the afternoon as Greg Speed and Blake Kelley belted two apiece. Grant Cosby earned his fourth win of the spring in the opener while Randy Jones improved to 2-0 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

RSU scored early and often in the first game of the day to post a 17-5 win.

The Cats scored five runs in each of the first two inning to take a 10-2 lead. Kelley and Ryan Salsbury ripped RBI doubles in the second inning and then Kelley and Zach Hamby cranked back-to-back homers in the third. Senior catcher Eric Schulz led off the top of the third with a bomb over the left field wall. The Hillcats added three more runs in the top fourth inning and finished with 16 hits.

Cosby (4-0) pitched the first three frames, allowing two runs on two hits. Senior Tyler Henderson made his second relief appearance of the season and tossed the final two innings. Henderson racked up three strikeouts and allowed three runs on six hits.

Speed, Kelley, Salsbury, Schulz, Coby Wright and Travis Harold each enjoyed multi-hit games. Hamby picked up three RBI while five others had two.

GAME TWO

It was more of the same in the nightcap as Randy Jones and Joe Hardzog teamed up for a three-hit shutout in a 13-0 victory.

Speed led off the game with his second home run of the season and added his third long ball one inning later. Kelley clubbed his second homer of the day in the second inning and Coby Wright followed two batters later with his first career home run. RSU led 9-0 after two innings thanks to the four homer assault. The Cats added two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to reach the final margin.

Jones (2-0) allowed just one hit over the first three innings to earn the win. Hardzog yielded two hits and fanned two batters with two innings of scoreless relief. Speed went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBI from the leadoff spot. Joe Faircloth and Tyler Harold joined Wright with two hits in the contest.

Rogers State (31-13, 16-11) extended its winning streak to five games after the doubleheader sweep of the Mustangs.
