PITTSBURG, Kan. - The Rogers State softball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a pair of wins over NCAA Division II foes Friday at the Pittsburg State University Tournament in Pittsburg, Kan.
Â
Sophomore pitcher Kelli Dunagan turned in her most dominate performance of the season with 15 strikeouts in a 4-3 win over Missouri Southern. RSU then crushed Southwest Baptist, 8-0, in the second game of the day to improve to 19-3 overall.
GAME ONE
Â
Dunagan overcame some spotty defense and the Hillcat offense did just enough to squeak by Missouri Southern (Joplin, Mo.) in the opening game of the tournament. RSU took a 4-0 lead after a three-run third inning. Chassidy Austin started the inning with a single up the middle and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dunagan. Marie Gaudet and Randi Tyler raced home on a two out single by Sara Walkup.
Â
The Lady Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull to within one. Two errors on the Hillcat infield aided the MSSU offense, but Dunagan managed to minimize the damage by striking out the final two batters of the frame. The Collinsville High School product finished with a season-high 15 strikeouts to record her twelfth win of the season.
Â
Both teams were held scoreless over the final three innings as RSU held on for the 4-3 win. The Hillcats tallied four hits with Walkup picking up two crucial RBI.
GAME TWO
Â
The Hillcats regained their offensive swagger against Southwest Baptist (Bolivar, Mo.). Walkup's three run homer in the top of the sixth inning capped a four-run inning and led to an eventual run-rule.
Â
RSU scored twice in the top of the third as Megan Wood and Gaudet cranked back-to-back singles to start the inning and later scored. Katie Bointy ripped a two RBI single to right field in the fifth to stretch the lead to 4-0. Walkup's first homer of the season, a shot to left-center field, erased any doubt in the outcome. Austin followed with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tanya Koch to cap the scoring.
Â
Dunagan (13-3) picked up the win by pitching the first four innings. She scattered three hits and did not allow a run or a walk while fanning five. Jenny Johnson tossed two perfect innings of the relief to complete the shutout.
Â
Rogers State (19-3, 4-0) has postponed its Monday date with Northwestern Oklahoma State due to impending severe weather in the area. The doubleheader with the Lady Rangers has been rescheduled for Friday, April 25 at 1 and 3 p.m. The Hillcats will enjoy spring break before returning to action Wednesday, March 26. RSU will travel to USAO for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
