Softball Hillcats Topple Drovers Twice

CHICKASHA, Okla. - Rogers State picked up a pair of victories over the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha Wednesday and upped its winning streak to 10 games.

Sophomore Kelli Dunagan tossed a two-hit shutout in the opening game and went 6-for-8 at the plate with a home run in the doubleheader to lead the Hillcats to a sweep. The tenth-ranked Cats improved to 6-0 in Sooner Athletic Conference play and 21-3 overall.

GAME ONE

Megan Wood broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run single to score Sara Walkup and Katie Bointy. Dunagan led off the fifth with a double and Bointy followed with an RBI double. Walkup chased Bointy home with a two-out single to give the Hillcats a 4-0 lead.

That was more than enough cushion for Dunagan. The Collinsville product didn't allow a hit until the fourth and tallied 10 strikeouts against just one walk. She improved upon her astounding 0.47 ERA with the seven inning shutout and ran her record to 14-3 for the year.

GAME TWO

Dunagan again set the tone in the nightcap. She doubled in the top of the first inning and scored on a single by Bointy to put RSU in front, 1-0. USAO answered with a run off Jenny Johnson in the bottom of the first as Leslie Beaty doubled and scored on a triple by Michelle Bauer.

Dunagan put the Cats back in front with a homer to lead off the top of the fourth. RSU tacked on another run in the inning and added three more in the fifth to surge ahead, 6-1. Lillian Nevarez tripled to start the Hillcat fifth and scored on a squeeze bunt by Wood. Walkup belted a two-run single to left field to cap the RSU scoring.

The Drovers scratched across a run in the bottom of the fifth and Beaty cranked a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to reach the final margin, 6-3. Beaty finished 4-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Johnson (7-0) earned the win with 4.2 innings of work. Dunagan worked the final 2.1 innings and added four more strikeouts to her totals while surrendering one run.

The Hillcats return home Friday to host No. 1 Lubbock Christian at the Hillcat Complex. It will mark the first ever meeting between Top 10 teams in Claremore. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
