Lubbock Christian Shuts Down Hillcats

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Fourth-ranked Lubbock Christian used its top two pitchers to shutout Rogers State for 13 innings and earn a doubleheader sweep at the Hillcat Complex Friday.

Gary Poynter hurled a complete game shutout in the series opener as the Chaparrals won, 6-0. The Hillcats scored their only run of the afternoon in the final inning of Game 2. LCU starter Chris Holguin got a six run cushion from his offense in the top of the first and responded with six shutout innings as the Chaps took the nightcap, 7-1.

GAME ONE

Lubbock put together five consecutive hits with two outs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. RSU starter Shawn Epps fanned Rob Learned and Tyler Johnson to start the inning before being peppered for five straight singles by the bottom of the LCU lineup. Catcher Karlton Banks delivered the biggest blow with a two-run shot to right on a 0-2 pitch.

Epps was forced to leave with an abdominal injury in the fourth after retiring the first batter of the inning. Jarred Bogany greeted reliever D.J. Thompson with a solo homer to left field to extend the lead to five. Thompson did not allow another run over the next 2.2 innings and surrendered just two hits in his stint. Jaime Armendariz singled and scored in the top of the seventh off freshman Joe Hardzog to reach the final margin, 6-0.

Poynter (6-1) was dominant from start to finish. He scattered four hits across seven innings and never allowed a runner to reach third base. Epps (4-2) suffered the loss in his shortest outing of the season, just 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO

A six run first inning by the Chaps set the tone in Game 2. RSU starter Chris Graves yielded three walks and three hits in the inning and the Hillcats quickly found themselves in a deep hole.

Graves and sophomore reliever Grant Cosby combined to allow just one unearned run over the final six innings, but the damage had been done. Holguin kept the Cats at-bay through the first six innings. The senior right-hander tallied nine strikeouts and erased RSU's scoring threats in the fifth and sixth innings.

The Hillcats finally broke through for a run in the bottom of the seventh off Chaps reliever Billy Jordan. Ryan Littlejohn doubled to start the inning and later scored on a double play groundout by Joe Faircloth. RSU matched LCU with seven hits in the nightcap. Brandon Denton and Ryan Salsbury picked up two hits apiece.

Holguin (5-1) earned the win and extended the Chaps winning streak to 17 games. Graves (2-1) suffered his first loss of the year for RSU.

Rogers State (15-7, 7-6) had its five-game winning streak snapped and lost consecutive games for just the second time this season. Lubbock Christian (24-1, 11-0) and RSU will play the final game of the series Saturday at the Hillcat Complex. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
