HAYS, Kan. — No. 12 Rogers State Men's Soccer (4-2-1, 0-1-0 GAC/MIAA) dropped the conference opener on the road to No. 22 Fort Hays State (3-1-3, 1-0-0) 2-0 Thursday night at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
RSU finished with 14 shots to the Tigers' 13, but put just three on goal. The match was scoreless at halftime before the Tigers scored twice in the second half to claim the top 25 clash.
RSU generated the early chances, taking four shots and a corner in the sixth minute, but could not convert.
Louis Bassett put the Hillcats' two shots on goal in the half, both saved by Payton Roehrich, while
Tristan Miller made two saves after the Tigers created chances later in the half.
The Hillcats spent the second half chasing the Tigers after Juan Linares scored in the 51st minute, and Mathis Gaultier made it 2-0 in the 72nd minute. RSU pushed late with four corner kicks after the 80th minute and added shots from
Jake Mangan,
Conor Mills and
Matthew Reed, but neither chance found the back of the net as Hays held on for the victory.
Bassett led RSU with four shots and put two on goal. Miller (4-2-1) played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves.
RSU will return to action this Saturday against the Newman Jets in Wichita, Kansas. Kickoff from Wilkins Field is slated for 10 a.m.
