Season-best shooting nights from Jordan Jr. and Mason propel Hillcats past Jets

RSU claimed the game in Wichita, 84-72

WICHITA, Kan. — Rogers State men's basketball (8-5, 2-2 MIAA) secured an 84-72 victory over Newman (5-7, 1-2 MIAA) on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium. RSU dominated in the paint, scoring 52 points, contributing to their decisive win.

RSU opened the first half with a 3-pointer from Jabryn Anderson, assisted by Tim Jordan Jr., setting an early tone. The Hillcats capitalized on fast breaks and points in the paint, with Andrew Mason and Caden Fry contributing significant points during a stretch that extended their lead. Defensive stops, including blocks by Jordan, helped maintain momentum.

Despite a few counterattacks by the Jets, RSU outpaced the home squad with efficient shooting, including a series of assists that highlighted their ball movement. The Hillcats closed the half strong with fast-break points, pushing their lead to 48–31 at the end of the first half.

The second half began with Mason igniting RSU with a dunk just nine seconds in, assisted by Damondre McKnight, establishing momentum with an early score of 50-31. The Cats showcased strong inside play, scoring 28 points in the paint, and maintained a steady lead despite the Jets' attempts to close the gap. A series of fast breaks and efficient scoring from Jordan and Mason helped maintain the edge.

The Jets responded with a series of quick scores, but turnovers and defensive stops, including a crucial block by Anderson, kept Newman from mounting a significant comeback. RSU capitalized on these opportunities, with Fry and Stephon Thomas contributing key baskets to extend their lead. As the half concluded, RSU preserved its advantage, closing the half with an 84-72 score.

Jordan led RSU with a season-high 22 points, converting 8 of 10 field goals and blocking two shots. Mason matched a career-high 22 points, hitting 10 of 17 from the field and grabbing six rebounds.
