TOPEKA, Kan. - Rogers State baseball (21-12, 11-9 MIAA) looked to complete the series sweep at Washburn (18-19, 11-13 MIAA), but the Ichabods had other plans as the Hillcats came up short 7-3 on Monday afternoon.
Washburn got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning with an early run. After two scoreless frames, the Ichabods scored again in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.Â
WU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the advantage to 5-0, before tacking on another run in the seventh to go up 6-0.
RSU refused to get shut out and in the top of the eighth inning pushed across three runs to cut the deficit to 6-3. Andrew Ramirez launched a towering home run over the center field fence, allowing Carson Cheatwood to score. Weston Peninger later came in from third base on an error by the second baseman.Â
Unfortunately, that is where the comeback ended as the Ichabods answered with one final run in the bottom half of the frame to set the final score at 7-3.
Caleb Lunnon (3-0) earned the win, with Fidel Hatch (1) picking up his first save of the season. Christopher Spry (3-2) took the loss.
RSU returns home to the RCB Bank Sports Complex tomorrow and will face Arkansas-Fort Smith in the middle game of their mid-week series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
