No. 11 Hillcats Roll To Mid-Week Doubleheader Sweep Of Arkansas Tech

CLAREMORE, Okla. - No. 11 Rogers State softball (27-10) rolled to a mid-week doubleheader sweep of Arkansas Tech (22-17) on Tuesday.

GAME 1 - RSU 4, ATU 1

After three scoreless innings to open the game, the Hillcats broke the seal in the fourth inning with a Callie Yellin solo shot to left to take a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Suns responded in the top of the sixth with a solo home run of their own to tie the game at 1-1.

However, RSU slammed the door in the home half of the frame with three final runs to lock up the 4-1 victory. Kaylee Lyon wore a 1-0 pitch to lead off the inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from McKayla Carney. Abbey Rogers drew a four-pitch walk. Facing a 2-0 count, Yellin struck again with her second round-tripper of the day, this one a three-run bomb to left center that brought in Carney and Rogers.

Jade Sanders (9-5) earned the win after a 5.0 inning start, only allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Harley Culie (4) picked up the save, closing things out with two hitless innings in relief with two strikeouts. Alexis Findley (9-7) took the loss.

GAME 2 - RSU 8, ATU 1

The bats stayed hot for the Hillcats in the second game as they again jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Bridgett Morales led off the frame with a 3-1 walk. Saylor Brown later plated Morales with a single to second.

RSU tacked on three more runs in the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Back-to-back, one-out singles from McKayla Carney and Abbey Rogers put runners at first and second. Callie Yellin loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Morales cleared the bases as she drove in Carney and Rogers with a single to right field, with Yellin scoring on the throw home by diving around the outstretched arm of the catcher to reach the plate.

In the fifth inning, the Hillcats pushed across another run to go up 5-0 with Carney scoring on a sacrifice fly from Mariah Belzer.

ATU got a run back in the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-1 with a solo home run that bounced off the top of the center wall.

RSU put the game on ice in the bottom of the frame with three final runs to seal the 8-1 win. A towering, leadoff moon shot from Savannah Evans got things started. After Karlee Smith worked a 3-1 walk, Rogers unloaded on a 3-1 pitch for a two-run blast to left center.

Harley Culie (12-4) earned the win after only allowing one run on four hits with a strikeout over a 5.1-inning start. Jade Sanders was also solid out of the bullpen, scattering one hit in the 1.2 innings. Aly White (5-3) took the loss.

The Hillcats go back on the road on Friday, April 4 as they travel to Kearney, Neb. to face off against Nebraska Kearney. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
