WICHITA, Kan. - No. 6 Rogers State softball (24-7, 8-4 MIAA) used an offensive explosion to roll past Newman (5-25, 1-7 MIAA) in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
GAME 1 - RSU 7, NU 2
The Hillcat bats got hot early in the first game of the day as they dashed out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kaylee Lyon led off the frame with a single to second. Makayla Carney earned a walk to put runners at first and second. They moved into scoring position off an Abbey Rogers groundout to second. Chloe Bohuslavicky drove in Lyon with a ground out to short. Callie Yellin blasted a two-run round-tripper that scored Carney.
The Jets answered in the home half of the inning and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Over the next four innings, the game settled into a pitchers' duel. Both starters combined to scatter five hits, leaving eight runners stranded.
RSU stuck again for three more runs in the sixth to go up 6-2. Bohuslavicky led off the frame with a double to center, with Halle Hance coming in to pinch run. Bridgett Morales walked and Mariah Belzer reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. A one-out, bases-loaded walk of Savannah Evans brought in Hance. Karlee Smith plated Morales and Belzer with a two-RBI single to left.
They tacked on one final run in the seventh to seal the 7-2 victory as Melaina Heaton scored from third on a double steal.
Jade Sanders (8-4) earned the complete game win, only allowing two runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts. Zoe Fulks (0-4) took the loss.
GAME 2 - RSU 21, NU 0 (5 innings)Â
The offensive fireworks kicked into high gear in the second game as the Hillcats pushed across 12 runs in the first inning. Chloe Bohuslavicky started things with a two-RBI double to center, scoring Kaylee Lyon and McKayla Carney. Callie Yellin drove in Abbey Rogers with an RBI single to center. Bohuslavicky scored from third on a double steal. Bridgett Morales doubled in Yellin. Saylor Brown launched a three-run bomb that plated Morales and Mariah Belzer. Lyon blasted a solo shot, and Bohuslavicky smashed a three-run moon shot, bringing in Carney and Rogers to cap off the big inning.Â
The runs kept coming in the second as they pushed across four more to extend the advantage to 16-0. Brown plated Belzer with an RBI single to left. Carney later drove in Brown with Brooke Nauman scoring on an error by the left fielder. Lyon came in on a sacrifice fly from Rogers.
A two-run blast from Belzer put the Hillcats up 18-0 in the third, with Morales scoring after a leadoff single to center.Â
RSU sealed the 21-0 rout with three final runs in the fourth. An RBI double from Rogers brought in Carney. Morales returned the favor with an RBI single to center, plating Rogers. Brown drove in Morales with an RBI single to left.
With 24 total hits in the game, the Hillcats tied the single-game school record, matching the effort in the 18-11 win over Southern Nazarene on March 15, 2017.
Harley Culie (11-2) earned the win after a 3.0 inning start that saw her scatter one hit with two strikeouts. Torie Sandoval was also solid in the final two innings of relief, only giving up two hits with two strikeouts.
RSU returns home on Friday, March 28 to open a six-game homestand with a doubleheader against Pittsburg State. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
