No. 9 RSU Sweeps Final Day Of UCO/OC Invitational

EDMOND, Okla. – No. 9 Rogers State softball (6-3) swept the final day of the UCO/OC Invitational with wins over Missouri S&T (0-8) and No. 20 Southern Nazarene (5-4) on Saturday.

GAME 1 – RSU 7, MST 1

In the first game of the day, the Hillcats got off to a fast start in the first inning as they took an early 1-0 lead. Kaylee Lyon led the game off with a double to center field. With one out, Abbey Rogers traded places with her, doubling to left center.

They added three more runs in the second inning to go up 4-0. After Mariah Belzer doubled to left to lead off the frame, Savannah Evans blasted a ball over the center field wall for a two-run shot. Later in the inning, Rogers drove in Halle Hance with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Miners got on the board in the bottom of the third and cut the deficit to 4-1 with a solo homer to right.

In the top of the fifth, Evan put the Hillcats back up 5-1 as she launched her second round-tripper of the day, this one a solo shot to left.

RSU tacked on two final runs in the top of the sixth to seal the 7-1 win. After Rogers doubled to right with one out, Callie Yellin got in on the home run fun with a two-run bomb of her own to left.

Torie Sandoval (2-1) earned the complete game win, only allowing one run on three hits with four strikeouts. Tinley Beecham (0-4) took the loss.

GAME 2 – RSU 5, SNU 0

In a rematch of last season's Central Region Championship, the Hillcat's stayed hot as they pushed across two runs in the first inning. Kaylee Lyon again hit a double to lead off the game, this time to right and then moved to third on a wild pitch. McKayla Carney brought her in with a single to right. Callie Yellin later plated Carney with a double to right.

RSU struck again in the third inning to extend their lead to 3-0. Both Carney and Abbey Rogers earned one out walks and then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Bridgett Morales scored Carney with a sacrifice fly to left.

The Hillcats put the nail in the coffin as they went up 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run to center from Chloe Bohuslavicky and a Karlee Smith sacrifice fly that plated Brooke Nauman.

Over the final two and half innings, both pitching staffs combined to only allow three hits and left five runners stranded.

Jade Sanders (2-2) earned the complete game shutout, scattering two hits with five strikeouts. Maddie Southerland (0-2) took the loss.

The Hillcats will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 as they return to the Oklahoma City Metro area to compete in the Raising Canes Invitational and take on Southeastern Oklahoma State in Piedmont, Okla. First pitch is set for 5:15 p.m.
