Hillcats Fall To Washburn In Road Finale

TOPEKA, Kan. - Rogers State women's basketball (7-19, 1-16 MIAA) fell 64-52 to Washburn (16-11, 10-7 MIAA) in the regular season road finale on Saturday.
 
Alyza Aikins led RSU with 13 points to go with two rebounds, two steals and an assist. Jaiana Wiggins added 11 points with four rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Ella Hafer and Destiny Jones contributed seven points apiece, with Hafer posting four rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist while Jones added three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
The Hillcats got off to a solid start as they opened on a 5-2 run. However, the Ichabods answered back to go up 11-5 four minutes in. They went on to close out the period on a 7-3 run to carry a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
 
Washburn started the final 10 minutes of the half with three quick points to take a 23-13 advantage, but RSU responded with an 8-3 run to whittle the deficit back within five points at 26-21. The Ichabods pushed the lead back out to 31-24 going into the break.
 
WU found their momentum again in the second half, going on an 11-4 run to start the third quarter and take their largest lead of the day at 42-28. However, the Hillcats kept fighting and were able to string together some runs of their own to cut the margin down to 48-40 heading into the final period.
 
RSU kept battling and was able to get within six points twice in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as they would get. The Ichabods were able to outscore the Hillcats 16-12 in the final 10 minutes and eventually claimed the 64-52 win.
 
RSU will return to the Claremore Expo Center on Wednesday, Feb. 26 to begin the final homestand of the regular season against archrival Northeastern State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
