Hillcats Handle Business Against Ozarks in Home Opener

RSU claimed the win 77-59 on Claremont Day

CLAREMORE, Okla. — Rogers State men's basketball (2-1) handled the University of the Ozarks (0-3), 77-59, at the Claremore Expo Center on Claremont Elementary Day.

RSU capitalized on turnovers, scoring 32 points off 24 turnovers by Ozarks (AR). The Hillcats also dominated in the paint, contributing 50 points to secure the win.

Rogers State opened the game with assertive play in the paint, scoring 32 points inside and forcing turnovers to fuel fast breaks. The team's defense was pivotal, generating nine steals and limiting turnovers to just three, allowing them to control the pace early. RSU capitalized on these opportunities, extending the lead through consistent scoring, including contributions from the bench with 21 points.

The first half concluded with RSU maintaining momentum, as Damondre McKnight's fast break layup at the buzzer sealed a 42–21 lead. With a strong defensive showing and effective transition play, the Hillcats established a significant advantage by the end of the half.

RSU maintained a solid lead throughout the second half, showcasing effective scoring and defensive tactics. After an early layup exchange, a significant 3-pointer by Benard Omooria, assisted by Andrew Mason, helped RSU extend its lead to 45-23. The team capitalized on turnovers and fast-break opportunities, with McKnight contributing multiple key plays, including a jumper and a layup, to keep the momentum in their favor.

Despite a series of 3-pointers from Ozarks (AR), RSU responded with consistent scoring in the paint. Caden Fry and Mason each added layups, and the Hillcats benefited from strong rebounding and assists by Mason and Jabryn Anderson. The home team closed the half by maintaining its advantage, leading 77-59 at the end of regulation.

McKnight scored 14 points and recorded three steals, showcasing his effectiveness on both ends of the court. Stephon Thomas added 13 points, connecting on 6 of 7 field goals, and contributed two steals to the defensive effort. Anderson posted seven points and matched McKnight's three steals, while also assisting four times. Mason contributed nine points, highlighted by three steals and four offensive rebounds, bolstering the team's overall performance.

Adam Lopez led the Ozarks with 13 points, converting 5 of 7 field goals and making all three free-throw attempts. DJ Miller added 11 points, sinking 6 of 6 from the free-throw line and contributing three assists. Jaxon Hand provided a perimeter threat, scoring nine points from 3-point range, hitting 3 of 6 attempts. Vanya Nikolic dominated the boards with nine rebounds, while also adding three points and one steal.

RSU will look to avenge last year's blemish against Southern Arkansas on Saturday at a new time of 4 p.m. at the Clarmore Expo Center.
