WICHITA, Kan. — Rogers State men's soccer (9-1-4, 5-1-2 GAC/MIAA) and Newman ( 5-3-5, 2-2-3 GAC/MIAA) played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday at Wilkins Field.
The match commenced with the Hillcats taking an early lead against the Jets.
Oliver Hemlin (3) scored in the seventh minute, capitalizing on a saved shot by
Noah Preston-Watkins, giving RSU a 1-0 advantage.
Jaxon Kendall made several crucial saves, maintaining their lead despite multiple attempts from the Jets. The period concluded with RSU ahead 1-0.
The Hillcats applied pressure early in the second half, with
Alex Fletcher's shot in the 50th minute saved by Newman's Francisco Pinochet. Despite multiple attempts, including
Grayson Horsley's shot hitting the top woodwork at the 67th minute and a notable save on
Brandon O'Rourke's effort in the 65th minute, the Hillcats struggled to break through. Newman's Reuben Kester scored the equalizer at 67:27, assisted by Jonathan Garcia, bringing the score to 1-1. As the half concluded, RSU's momentum was hindered by fouls in the final minutes, as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Kendall made five saves in 90 minutes, facing 14 shots and allowing one goal. Hemlin scored the team's only goal, adding to his season total with one of his two shots on target. Horsley led the team in shot attempts, recording four shots with one on goal. O'Rourke and Preston-Watkins contributed with two shots on goal from their two attempts.
RSU will return to action on Saturday in Hays, Kansas, with a massive rematch against the No. 5 Fort Hays State Tigers (11-0-3, 7-0-1 GAC/MIAA). Kickoff from FHSU Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
