GULF SHORES, Ala. – After a day filled with weather delays, No. 9 Rogers State softball (0-1) fell to No. 6 Auburn Montgomery (1-0) in a six-inning 9-0 game to open the season and the Gulf Shores Invitational on Friday.
Â
The Warhawks came out of the gate hot as they dashed out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. A RBI groundout to second scored the first run from third with the other run coming in on a RBI single to right center.
Â
From there, the game settled down and devolved into a pitcher's duel for the next four and half innings. The two sides combined for six hits, leaving 10 runners stranded over that span.
Â
AUM broke the game open in the top of the sixth with seven runs on seven hits to take a 9-0 lead. A double and a two-RBI single brought in the first three runs. With the bases loaded and a 2-2 count, the Warhawks launched a grand slam over the left field wall.
Â
The Hillcats tried to mount a comeback to force one final inning in the bottom half of the frame, putting runners on first and second with two outs. Unfortunately, a fly ball to foul territory ended the threat and the game.
Â
RSU will look to bounce back tomorrow with two games against Nova Southeastern and Montevallo. The games are scheduled for 12:45 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
