EDMOND, Okla. - For the second time in three years, Roger State softball (43-10) captured the MIAA Tournament Championship with a 2-1 walk-off win in a thrilling, extra inning game over Pittsburg State (51-6) on Saturday.
Six Hillcats earned spots on the All-Tournament team including Sara Llamas-Howell, Callie Yellin, McKayla Carney, Jade Sanders and Kaylee Lyon. Lyon was also named Tournament MVP after she was responsible for six runs in the tournament, including four RBI, leading all players.
In what was an instant classic pitcher's duel, neither starter allowed a run in the first four innings. In that span, Sara Llamas-Howell scattered one hit with that being the only runner left stranded. Likewise, Ava Laurent scattered two hits and left four runners stranded.
The Hillcats finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Chelsea Spain put herself in scoring position with a one out double to right center with a groundout to second moving her to third. On a 3-2 count, McKayla Carney laced a ball up the middle to drive in Spain.
The Gorillas responded in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the tying run and knot things at 1-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, Spain led off the frame with another double, this one down the left field line. After taking the first pitch for a strike, Carney came up big again as she blasted a walk-off single to center field, allowing Spain to score the game winning run.
Llamas-Howell (21-6) earned the complete game win, only allowing the one run on four hits with three strikeouts.Â
By winning the tournament, the Hillcats have also earned the MIAA's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Central Regional and will learn their next postseason destination during the NCAA Selection Show on Monday at 9 a.m. central time.
