Vaughan Makes History, Yellin Walks Off Sweep Of Pittsburg State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 3 Rogers State softball (26-4, 10-0 MIAA) continued their 16-game win streak with a doubleheader sweep of No. 11 Pittsburg State (32-4, 6-2 MIAA) on Saturday.

With the two wins today, head coach Andrea Vaughan became the first Hillcat coach to win 300 career games with a record of 301-153-1. Earlier this season, she became the all-time winningest coach in school history, passing RSU Hall of Fame baseball coach Ron Bradley.

GAME 1 – RSU 2, PSU 1

After a scoreless first inning, the Hillcats broke the game open in the second inning with a 2-0 lead. With two outs, McKayla Carney drove an 0-2 pitch through the left side of the infield for a single. Kaylee Lyon then blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run homer.

Over the next four innings, neither starter allowed a run. Sara Llamas-Howell scattered two hits and left two runners stranded over that span. Pitt State's Ava Laurent scattered three hits with four runners left stranded.

In the top of the seventh, the Gorillas tried to mount a comeback, but were only able to push across one run to set the final score at 2-1. The run scored on a fielder's choice to short.

Llamas-Howell (13-2) earned the complete game win only allowing the one run on three hits with eight strikeouts. Laurent (10-1) suffered her first loss of the season.

GAME 2 – RSU 5, PSU 4

The Hillcats wasted no time getting on the board in the second game as they took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Paxton Donaldson reached on a one-out double to center field and then took third on a wild pitch. Bridgett Morales drove her in with a RBI groundout to third.

Pitt State responded in the top of the second to tie things at 1-1 with a bases loaded walk.

RSU jumped back in front 2-1 in the bottom half of the frame. A one-out double put McKayla Carney on as Kaylee Lyon brought her in with a single to right center.

The Gorillas took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning at 3-1 with two runs. A two-run home run to right scored both runs.

Once again, the Hillcats had an answer as they tied things at 3-3 in the bottom half. A bases loaded hit by pitch of Lana Gass allowed Brooke Nauman to cross home.

In the fifth, PSU again retook the lead 4-3 with run off a RBI double to left center.

Rogers State tied things one more time in the bottom of the sixth at 4-4. Nauman scored again, this time on a Donaldson groundout to second.

Facing one out in the bottom of the seventh, Callie Yellin worked the count to 2-2. On the next pitch, she unloaded on a pitch that sent it careening off the scoreboard in right with a walkoff bomb that gave RSU the 5-4 win.

Harley Culie (4-0) earned the win, working the final 3.0 innings in relief and only allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts. Chelsea Beville (6-1) suffered her first loss of the season.

RSU is back in action on Friday, March 29 as they host Central Missouri in the third series of the eight game homestand. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
