Hillcats See Nine-Game Win Streak End In Extra Inning Heartbreaker Against Fort Hays State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (12-4, 4-1 MIAA) saw their nine-game win streak come to an end as the came up short 9-4 against Fort Hays State (12-5, 2-3 MIAA) in the second game of the series on Saturday.
 
The Tigers jumped on the board early as they took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The run scored on a RBI groundout to second. They added another run in the second to go up 2-0 thanks to a double down the left field line.
 
The Hillcats responded in the bottom of the fourth with four runs to take the lead 4-2. Royce Tsumura got things started with a double that scored Ryan Tiger from second. Matthew Schure then returned the favor as he brought in Tsumura and Jake Mitchell with a two RBI single to center. Schure later scored from third on a throwing error by the catcher to cap off the scoring.
 
After three scoreless innings, FHSU tied things at 4-4 in the top of the eighth with two runs. A bases loaded walk brought in the first run with a double to left plating the other run.
 
The Hillcats had a chance to walk things off in the bottom of the ninth, but Mitchell was gunned down at the plate on a single to right from Schure, which forced extra innings.
 
In the top of the 10th inning, the Tigers exploded for five runs to claim the 9-4 win. A single to right center scored the first two runs. A sacrifice fly to right and a double scored the other three runs.
 
Dylan Rinker (2-1) earned the win. Nate Wohlgemuth (0-2) took the loss. However, Blake Johnson turned in a solid 6.0 inning start only allowing one earned run on three hits with nine strikeouts.
 
The Hillcats will look to the take the series in the final game of the three-game set tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
