CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (13-7, 5-4 MIAA) fell 11-0 to Pittsburg State (16-5, 7-2 MIAA) in the series finale on Monday.
Â
The game started out as a classic pitchers' duel as both pitching staffs refused to allow a run in the first four innings.
Christopher Spry held the Gorillas to two hits and stranded five runners over that span, while PSU's pitchers also allowed two hits with six runners stranded.
Â
The Gorillas broke the game open in the fifth inning as they pushed across five runs for a 5-0 lead. A bases loaded walk brought in the first run. Later in the frame, a grand slam to left plated the other four runs.
Â
They tacked on another run in the sixth to go up 6-0. The run scored on a single through the left side of the infield.
Â
In the top of the seventh, Pitt State scored five more runs to seal the 11-0 win. A RBI double to left scored the first run with a three-run homer over the left field scoreboard and a sacrifice fly to right bringing in the other runs.
Â
The Hillcats had chances to score as they loaded the bases twice during the game and left a total of 12 runners stranded.
Â
Cadyn Castellanos (3-1) earned the win. Spry (1-1) took the loss.
Â
RSU will need a short memory as they face off against No. 10 Missouri Southern tomorrow in the first game of the MIAA mid-week series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
