RSU Completes Sweep Of McKendree In Back-And-Forth Series Finale

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (6-3) claimed the series sweep of McKendree (0-6) with a 6-4 win on Sunday.
 
The Hillcats jumped on the board first with an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Joel Escalante brought home AJ Folds with a sacrifice fly to center.
 
The Bearcats answered in the top of the second to tie things at 1-1 with a solo home run to right.
 
RSU retook the lead 2-1 in the bottom half. With the bases loaded, Ramon Torres came home after Folds was hit by a pitch.
 
McKendree jumped in front with a 3-2 lead, pushing across two runs in the third. A two-run blast to left scored both runs.
 
Again, the Hillcats knotted things at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth. Folds plated Carson Cheatwood with a single to right.
 
The Bearcats responded with another run in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. A RBI single up the middle scored the run from second.
 
RSU retook the lead in the bottom half as the brough home two runs to go up 5-4. Jake Mitchell unloaded on a 1-0 pitch with a towering shot to the top of the stands in left field that scored Matthew Delgado.
 
They added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to push out to a 6-4 lead. Mitchell again came up clutch as he drove in Geovanni Blackshaw with a single through the left side of the infield.
 
Landon Riley came in from the bullpen for the top of the ninth and slammed the door, punching out three straight Bearcats to seal the win.
 
Christopher Spry (1-0) earned the win, working 6.0 innings with four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Riley (1) earned his first save of the season. Quinn Tocheniuk also turned in a solid performance, throwing 2.0 shutdown innings with no hits and two strikeouts. JD Barnes (0-1) suffered the loss.
 
The Hillcats will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 20 as they travel to Bethany, Okla. for a mid-week matchup against Southern Nazarene. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
