RSU Drops Road Finale To Jets

WICHITA, Kan. – Rogers State women's basketball (4-22, 2-18 MIAA) fell 58-47 to Newman (9-16, 6-14 MIAA) in the regular season road finale on Saturday.

Two Hillcats finished in double figures. Kamryn Estell led RSU with 13 points as well as six rebounds and two assists. Briana Baker-Bruce added 11 points with four assists and a rebound. Trinity Jackson finished three points shy of a double-double with seven points and 10 rebounds along with an assist. Jordan Lewis contributed seven points, two assists, two steals and a rebound.

The first quarter was a defense-heavy period with neither team finding much offensive success in the opening 10 minutes. Even thought the Jets started the game on a 9-3 run, the Hillcats answered back a took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter with a 7-0 run in the final 1:13 of the period.

RSU kept the momentum rolling in the second quarter as they opened the period on a 4-0 run to push out to their largest lead of the game at 16-9. Unfortunately, Newman battled back to tie the game and retake the lead 22-18 with 2:11 left in the half. They eventually carried a 24-22 margin into the break.

The second half was all Jets as they outscored the Hillcats 16-11 in the third quarter. Newman took their first double-digit lead of the game at 40-28 and led 40-33 headed into the final 10 minutes.

In the fourth quarter, RSU refused to go down without fighting and were able to pull within two points at 46-44 and again at 48-46. Unfortunately, that would be as close as they would get as the Jets closed out the game on a 10-1 run to take the 58-47 win.

The Hillcats will return home on Thursday, Feb. 23 to begin the final homestand of the regular season against Central Missouri. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
