TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Rogers State baseball (26-25) fell 5-2 in the final game of the MIAA Tournament First Round series to Northeastern State (36-14) on Sunday.
The RiverHawks wasted no time as they built up a 3-0 lead in the first three innings. NSU hit one solo home run in each of the first three frames.
After being no-hit through the first four innings, the Hillcats finally broke through in the fifth inning and managed to cut the deficit to 3-1. With two outs, Victor Ceniceros broke up the no-no bid with a single to left field. Marco Barerra turned around and brought him in with a RBI double to center.
NSU responded and pushed back out to a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. They launched their fourth solo homer of the day to bring in the run.
In the top of the eighth, RSU trimmed the lead to 4-2 with a run. Jesse Holguin led off by beating out an infield single to first base. Joel Escalante later drove him in with a RBI groundout to third.
The RiverHawks extended their lead with a final run in the bottom half of the eighth to seal the 5-2 win. The run came home on a RBI fielder's choice.
Jonathan Smithey (7-2) earned the win, with Jake Bigham (6) earning the save. Brett Karalius (3-3) took the loss.
