CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State women's basketball (11-17, 7-15 MIAA) fell in a heartbreaking double overtime game 87-83 to Northeastern State (7-21, 5-17 MIAA) in the season finale on Saturday.
Three Hillcats finished in double figures. Senior Vanessa Gajdosova led the way with a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds as well as three assists, two blocks and a steal. Senior Katrina Christian put up 21 points with three rebounds and four assists. Bailey Kliewer finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
After the Riverhawks opened the game on a 7-2 run, things were tight for the remainder of the first quarter. RSU managed to trim the lead to one point at 10-9 and only trailed 13-11 headed into the second quarter.
The final 10 minutes of the half remained close early, with four lead changes and a tie. The Hillcats took their first lead of the game at 16-15 and managed to push out to a 21-17 lead. NSU regained the lead at 22-21 and closed out the half on a 13-4 run to carry a 32-25 advantage into the locker room.
In the third quarter, RSU roared back with a 14-8 run to open the half and cut the deficit to 40-39. However, the Riverhawks were able to answer back and pushed back out to a 52-46 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Once again the Hillcats started the period strong with a 13-5 run to retake the lead 59-57. Things grew very close for the remaining three minutes which featured three lead changes and a tie as Kylee Day drained a three pointer with 12 second left to send it to overtime knotted at 67-67.
Both overtime periods were incredibly close. In the first bonus period there were four ties and three lead changes, with Katrina Christian making a clutch free throw with six seconds left to extend the game another five minutes. In the second overtime period, NSU led the entire time and closed out the game with three-straight made free throws to put the game away 87-83.
