CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State men's soccer (5-3-1, 1-2 GAC/MIAA) took down Newman (0-7-1, 0-2-1 GAC/MIAA) for their first conference win of the season on Monday.
Three Hillcats connected on goals in the rout. Jaxon Pitt led the squad with two goals with Callum Hubble and Jaime Ponce getting on the board as well. The RSU defense was equally impressive as they stifled the Jets for a measly five total shots, with four on goal. Declan Viljoen was excellent as always in goal with two saves.
The Hillcats completely dominated Newman in the opening 45 minutes as they outshot the Jets 12-2. Pitt scored the match's first goal in 26th minute to give the home team an early 1-0 lead. Hubble would add to this lead with a goal on a penalty kick in the 43rd minute, giving RSU the 2-0 advantage going into the intermission.
The second half was no different as the Hillcats outshot the Jets 11-3 in the period. Ponce found the back of the net on a beautifully played corner kick from Hubble in the 61st minute. Pitt would again connect on a goal thanks to a pass from Grant King six minutes later to put RSU up 4-0. Newman was finally able to get on the board in the 73rd minute to end the shutout. The Hillcats eventually took the 4-1 victory.
RSU will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 7 as they travel to Searcy, Ark. to face off against Harding.
