Women's Basketball's Comeback Bid Falls Short At Newman

WICHITA, Kan. – The Rogers State women's basketball fell short on the road to Newman University, 76-64, Wednesday night in MIAA play at the Fugate Gymnasium.
 
Four Hillcats (2-15, 0-8 MIAA) would finish in double figures, as Rogers State used a 15-0 run to fuel a comeback bid that fell short against the Jets (8-9, 3-5 MIAA).
 
How it Happened: The Jets jumped out to the lead in early in the game large in part to a 21-10 first quarter. The Jets would extend the lead to 42-25 at the break.
 
Newman was 45 percent from the field in the game, but 50 percent from the three-point line, hitting seven triples in the first half.
 
The Jets would expand the lead to as much as 23 with their first basket in the fourth quarter before the Hillcats rallied.
 
Rogers State used the 15-0 run to cut the deficit to as little as six points with Alicia Brown's jumper with 2:16 remaining. Brown, Bailey Kliewer and Samariah Thompson all had five points each during the run.
 
Players of Note: Sophomore Vanessa Gajdosova would lead the way for the Hillcats with 13 points. Gajdosova would also have five rebounds and two steals.
 
Thompson would put up 12 points for the Hillcats. She would also tally four steals and four assists, leading the team in both categories for the game.
 
Brown would finish with 11 points. The senior also put four rebounds and two blocks.
 
Kliewer would be the final Hillcat in double-figures, finishing with 10 points. The freshman would also grab three rebounds.
 
Senior Darian Jackson would lead the team in rebounds for the game with nine. Jackson would put up seven points and steal in the game as well.
 
Key Statistic: Newman's bench players provided 61 of their 76 points in the game, compared to just 28 points from the Hillcats. Newman's Kaitlyn Potter had six three pointers to score 27 points off the bench for the Jets.
 
Notables: Rogers State shot 37.1 percent from the field and 34.6 percent from three-point range. The Hillcats were also just 56.3 (9-16) percent from the line.
 
Newman finished with 39.3 percent shooting from the field and 34.8 percent from behind the arc. The Jets shot 87 percent (20-23) from the free-throw stripe.
 
The loss extends the Hillcats losing skid to 12 straight this season. The Hillcats are winless in conference play in their debut season in the MIAA.
 
Up Next: Rogers State will remain on the road as the Hillcats travel to the Oklahoma City area to take on the University of Central Oklahoma. The Hillcats will tip off with the Bronchos at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, at Hamilton Field House.
