CLAREMORE, Okla. – Rogers State Women's Soccer fell in their home opener to Newman University, 3-0, Friday night at Soldier Field in non-conference play.
The Hillcats were held scoreless for the first time in 2019, as the Jets' defense limited the Hillcats to five shots on target in the game.
The game remained scoreless over the first 45 minutes, with Newman leading the Hillcats in possession with 60 percent of the ball.
Laurelle Theodore had the best scoring chance for either team, but her close-range effort failed to sneak through the legs of Newman goalkeeper Jackie Lari.
However, the visitors would capitalize on several close-range efforts, starting with a corner kick less than four minutes into the second half. Vanessa Ortiz connected on the corner from Kennedy Weaver to put Newman ahead 1-0.
Less then four minutes later, Newman doubled their lead as Weaver set up Katie Hartman, who finished into the lower left corner.
The Hillcats would have several chances over the next 20 minutes, including efforts from
Bailey Jarvis and
Kori Watters that were saved by Lari.
Newman would seal the victory on the 74-minute mark as Weaver set up her third goal of the game as Makena Schroeder scored to make it 3-0.
The game finished with Newman holding 51 percent of the possession, but the visitors extended their shutout streak to five consecutive games to begin the season.
ReVella Fisher finished with four saves in the game for the Hillcats.
Rogers State will return to action on Sunday with the first-ever meeting between the Hillcats and Northeastern State. The game is set for a 2 p.m. kickoff at Soldier Field.
