DENTON, Texas – The Rogers State Women's Soccer team suffered their first defeat of the season on Thursday, falling to a late goal at Texas Woman's University to lose 2-1.
The Hillcats quickly went behind as the hosts opened up the scoring in the fifth minutes as Riley Sutton scored to give the Pioneers the lead.
Rogers State would split the possession with the Pioneers, claiming 51 percent of the ball to 49 from the hosts, but the Hillcats did outshoot Texas Woman's 6-2 in the first half, forcing a pair of saves.
The Hillcats battled with the Pioneers for a majority of the second half before
Kori Watters finally found the breakthrough for Rogers State in the 82
nd minute.
Watters took a pass from
Laurelle Theodore and worked her way into the six -yard box before tucking the effort into the lower left corner past Daniela Marin. It was Watters first goal of the season and Theodore's second assist in as many games.
Despite finding the equalizer, the Hillcats were unable to hold onto the momentum as Texas Woman's responded with a goal less than three minutes later as Lexi D'Abrosca scored from inside the six-yard box to give the Pioneers the lead and the win.
Rogers State will look to rebound on Saturday as the wrap a form-game swing on the road to begin the season with a trip to Bethany, Oklahoma to take on Southern Nazarene. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. against the Crimson Storm at Wes Harmon Field.
