AUSTIN, Texas - The Hillcats split a doubleheader with St.Edward's on Saturday, falling in their series with the Hilltoppers.
Â
In the first game of RSU's (18-6) Saturday games with the Hilltoppers (6-9), first baseman
Danelle Day led the the Hillcats to a 6-3 win over the Hilltoppers.
Â
Day started off the onslaught in the fourth inning as just the second baserunner of the day for RSU following a walk by SEU pitcher Reagan Carter. Day would score four batters later on a fielder's choice hit by second baseman
Jaylan Gibson.
Â
In the very next inning, Day's two run home run widened the margin to 3-0 for the Hillcats. In the seventh inning, Day completed her three-run day with a walk and an eventual steal of home.Â
Â
Designated player
Allie McFetridge had the other multi-hit day for RSU with two, to go along with a run batted in and a stolen base.
Â
After suffering a hard-luck loss on Friday, pitcher
Andrea Morales rebounded in a big way. The El Paso, Texas native had seven strike outs on the day in route to her 11th win of the season.
Â
In the second game of the day, the Hillcats were hard-luck losers once again as the team lost 4-3.
Â
RSU opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly by Day that scored
Tailee Reding. Soon after, McFetridge doubled, scoring both Day and
Mikayla Waggnor. The hitting and scoring would be in short supply for the Hillcats, however.Â
Â
St. Edward's pitcher Julisa Ortega would go on to strike out 11 Hillcats over seven innings.
Â
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, a bunt single by Hilltoppers rightfielder Kylie Mica would plate the winning run following a throwing error that allowed the winning run to reach third.
