Theodore Scores Overtime Winner to Lead Hillcats In 2-1 Win Over Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Rogers State Women's Soccer team came from behind to defeat Missouri Western 2-1 in overtime Sunday afternoon in MIAA play at Spratt Stadium.

In the 98th minute, Laurelle Theodore gave the Hillcats their first overtime victory of the season with her fourth goal of the campaign.

The winning play started with long pass over the top from midfield by Kori Watters, who earned her team-leading fourth assist of the season. Then from the edge of the penalty area, Theodore flicked the pass on her first touch over the charging Anna Mayer, and into the center of the net for the winner.

The goal came on the third shot, but the first shot on target, for the Hillcats in the overtime period. Missouri Western had one shot on target in the overtime period prior to the Hillcats goal, but ReVella Fisher made the save to extend the game.

The hosts took the lead early in the game as Claire Meyers got on the end of a flick-on header from Mackenzie O'Neill and worked her way to the top of the box, where she beat Fisher for the opening goal of the game in the 13th minute.

However, the lead would be short lived, as the Hillcats responded 66 seconds later. Theodore had the ball at the edge of the penalty area and was taken down on a foul by one of the Griffins' defenders.

Anita Gaspar then stepped up and fired the penalty kick by Mayer to tie the game at 1-1 with her third goal of the season.

Rogers State finished with 17 shots in the game, including six on target. Missouri Western had 21 shots, but just five on target.

Fisher had dour saves in the game to pick up the win in net.

Rogers State will be back on the road next week and open up the weekend trip with a visit to central Kansas and Fort Hays State for a MIAA conference game against the Tigers. The Hillcats will kickoff with the Tigers at 7 p.m. on Friday at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
