Hillcats Fall at No. 8 Northeastern State on Late Goal

Tahlequah, Okla. – No. 8 Northeastern State scored late to down the Rogers State men's soccer team, 2-1, on Thursday (Sept. 6) at DeLoache Field in a matchup between the two local rivals.
 
After falling behind 1-0 late in the first half, the Hillcats (1-2) pulled even with the nationally-ranked RiverHawks (4-0) in the 66th minute of the contest on a Michael Turner goal, his first of his career in the navy and red, to tie the game at 1-1. Senior midfielder Noah Robson got the assist on the RSU goal.
 
NSU scored about seven minutes later to regain the advantage and hang on for the 2-1 win. Cullen Graham tallied the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute with Joe Garcia getting the assist.
 
Late in the first half the RiverHawks went in front 1-0 in the 41st minute when Joe Garcia scored for NSU as the senior had a part in both of the goals for the host team.
 
For the game, NSU held a slight 19-12 advantage in shots, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
 
Turner and Chris Sowder paced the Hillcats with three shots each, and Sowder had two shots on goal, a team high.
 
Dillon Dean went the full 90 minutes in goal, totaling six saves with the two goals allowed. He moved to 1-2 on the season.
 
In a physical affair between two in-state rivals, the teams combined for six yellow cards and nearly 30 fouls.
 
The Hillcats return home to host Rockhurst on Saturday (Sep. 8) at 7 p.m. at Soldier Field. Video streaming and live stats will be available on the Hillcat Network.
