Softball Takes 1 of 2 at Missouri S&T in Midweek Twinbill

ROLLA, Mo. – The Rogers State softball team responded from an extra-inning 3-2 game one loss with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap of a nonconference doubleheader at Missouri S&T on Tuesday (April 10) at the Missouri S&T Softball Field.
 
The game two win snapped a five-game losing streak for the navy and red as the Hillcats moved to 28-15 on the season.
 
MST 3, RSU 2 (9 innings)
 
The Hillcats gained a slight 2-0 lead in game one, but allowed two runs in the sixth before a walk-off single in the ninth inning of extra innings gave the Miners a 3-2 win.
 
With a runner on third and one out, Missouri S&T plated the game-winning run with a single to left for the 3-2 victory.
 
RSU went up 2-0 after four innings. Katy Taylor put down a bunt with Katelyn Gamble at third to score the game's first run in the second inning for a 1-0 edge. The navy and red doubled the advantage to 2-0 in the fourth when Sierra Skaggs hit a solo home run to center.
 
The Miners rallied in the sixth inning to tie the score at 2-2. After two singles put runners at first and second, a double to left drove in two runs with two outs for the even 2-2 score.
 
Gamble was 2-for-4 with one run scored in game one. Allie McFetridge went 2-for-5.
 
Senior Alex Brake earned the start in game one, going the full 8.1 innings. She posted eight strikeouts with seven hits and two earned runs allowed.
 
RSU 6, MST 2
 
RSU scored the first two runs of game two and never looked back en route to a 6-2 victory.
 
The navy and red opened the game with two runs in the first inning. After a leadoff single by Merissa Smith, Tailee Reding moved Smith into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. McFetridge drove in the first run of the game with a double to the gap in left, and Skaggs increased the edge to 2-0 with a single to center.
 
After S&T put up one run in the bottom of the first, the Cats reeled off the next four runs to build a 6-1 lead. Smith continued her strong day with a solo home run to center field in the third inning. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded walk added another tally for a 4-1 margin. Smith picked up the RBI as she reached on the walk. RSU poured on its final runs in the fifth inning when Andrea Morales doubled to right to bring home Skaggs and Danelle Day for the 6-1 advantage.
 
The Miners totaled one run in the fifth inning on an RBI single for the final 6-2 score.
 
Morales went the full 7.0 innings in game two in the circle. The freshman tallied two strikeouts with five hits and two runs allowed. She moved to 9-6 on the season.
 
Smith finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored for the offense. Day was 2-for-4 with one run scored. Rylee DeLozier went 2-for-3, and Morales posted a 1-for-3 performance with two RBI.
 
The Hillcats are off this weekend and return to action next Tuesday (April 17) at Northeastern State in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. in Tahlequah, Okla.
