HAYS, Kan. –
Alex Brake and
Andrea Morales each posted one-hitters and
Danelle Day tied a school record for RBI as the Rogers State softball team dominated in wins over Nebraska Kearney and Washburn by the scores of 11-0 and 12-0 on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex.
With the two wins, RSU (10-4) ran its winning streak to six straight games.
RSU 11, UNK 0
Brake, who threw a no-hitter in her last appearance against Fort Hays State on Thursday, pitched five complete innings and allowed only one hit with six strikeouts. She retired the first 11 straight in the game before a single through the infield in the fourth inning. She only allowed two base runners all game and didn't allow a base runner to advance past first base in the dominating performance.
The Hillcats totaled two runs in the first inning and then poured on the runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cruise to the 11-0 run-ruled shortened win over the Lopers.
Merissa Smith scored the opening run on a wild pitch, and
Rylee DeLozier upped the score to 2-0 with a single to the gap in right to score Allie Fetridge in the first inning.
RSU put up four runs in the fourth inning to build a 6-0 advantage. Day drove in two runs with a double up the middle and RBI singles from McFetridge and
Taylor Santistevan pushed the edge to a 6-0 score.
Five more runs scored in the fifth inning for the 11-0 final score. Smith doubled to bring in one run, and a walk with the bases loaded by McFetridge added another run. Santistevan posted another RBI with a single to centerfield, and
AJ Waggnor walked with the bases loaded for the 11-0 final score.
The navy and red tallied 14 hits with eight Cats registering hits. Santistevan went 2-for-4 with three RBI. McFetridge finished at 2-for-3 with two RBI in game one.
RSU 12, WU 0
Morales pitched a one-hitter in the 12-0 win over Washburn, going 5.0 innings and totaling five strikeouts. The freshman from El Paso, Texas started the game with nine straight outs before an infield single to start the fourth inning. She hit a batter to put two on with two outs in the fourth, but those two Ichabods were the only base runners allowed by Morales all game.
McFetridge and Day each knocked out grand slam home runs and Morales added a solo home run for nine of the 12 runs scored.
With the bases loaded in the first inning, McFetridge hit a towering grand slam home run to left field for an early 4-0 RSU advantage. Morales made it 5-0 with a solo shot to left in the first inning.
Day, who tied an RSU single game school record with six RBI, put the navy and red up 7-0 in the second with a single to centerfield to plate two runs.
McFetridge added her fifth RBI with a single to left to extend the edge to 8-0 still in the second inning.
The final four runs for RSU scored on Day's grand slam in the third inning for the final 12-0 score.
Day finished 2-for-2 at the plate with a school record six RBI. McFetridge went 2-for-3 hitting with five RBI. Morales registered a 2-for-3 performance with one RBI.
The Hillcats end their time in Hays with two games on Sunday (Feb. 18) against Upper Iowa and Fort Hays State at FHSU's Tiger Stadium. RSU takes on Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. and play host FHSU at 1 p.m. Live stats will be available for both contests.
