Downing's Double OT Golden Goal Lifts Hillcats to 1-0 Victory

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Junior Jordan Downing scored the double overtime golden goal to propel the Rogers State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Texas A&M International on Saturday at Soldier Field. With the win, the Hillcats moved to 6-0 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in the Heartland Conference.

Downing took advantage of a miscue in the back by the Dustdevils early in the second overtime to score the goal. Downing took away the ball from the defense after a header and went near post to beat the TAMIU goalkeeper and score the game-winning golden goal in the 101st minute of action for the 1-0 win.

The Hillcats poured it on in the two overtime periods as the Cats totaled seven shots and limited the Dustdevils to none. The navy and red held all the momentum toward the end of the contest before the breakthrough goal. For the game, RSU posted a 23-7 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. With the pressure going forward, the Hillcats finished with an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks and added many more opportunities with tons of crosses into the box.

TAMIU's Cio Bargallo came into the game with a conference-leading seven goals. The RSU defense limited her to only two shots, both from long range, in the shutout.

Taylor Sargent registered her fifth shutout of the season and moved to 6-0 in goal this year. The junior from The Colony, Texas made three saves, including an impressive diving stop, to keep the Dustdevils scoreless.

The Hillcats go on the road for two straight games against the conference elite in St. Edward's and Dallas Baptist University next week. The stretch starts on Thursday (Sept. 21) at SEU at 3 p.m. in Austin, Texas.
