CLAREMORE, Okla. – The visiting Newman Jets used a 13-0 run in the fourth period to down the Rogers State women's basketball, 74-61, on Monday afternoon (Jan. 2) in a Heartland Conference clash.
Holding a slight 51-50 advantage heading into the final stanza, the Jets (11-5, 1-2 Heartland) scored 23 points in the period to build the 13-point margin. RSU gained the lead to start the fourth with a jumper in the paint from
Rachel Block for a 52-51 score, but NU used a 13-0 run over six minutes to take a 64-52 edge with 3:46 remaining. The final seven points all came on made free throws.
The Jets did their damage from the free throw line with their final 17 points of the game coming from the line. For the fourth period, NU went 19-of-26 shooting from the free throw line. The Jets shot only five field goals in the final period, going 2-for-5.
For the contest, NU shot 36 free throws, making 27 for 75 percent.
The contest started fast for both teams with NU building a 22-16 advantage after one period. After getting behind 27-16, the Cats battled back with a 14-0 spurt to take a 30-27 lead midway through the second period. Block started the run with four straight points before
Lauren Schuldt took over with seven of the points during the run. She gave the Hillcats the lead with a three-point play at the 5:34 mark for a 28-27 edge. Two free throws gave RSU the 30-27 advantage.
At halftime, the score was tied at 35-35. An evenly played third period saw the Jets gain a slight 51-50 lead before the final stanza.
Schuldt totaled a double-double of 18 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, ranking seventh all-time in the RSU game records. She added two blocks and a steal. Also in double figures was Block with 16 points as she went 8-of-10 shooting from the free throw line.
NU's Hannah Alexander posted a game-high 24 points, going 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Mali Wright went for a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds.
