Strong Second Period Lifts Hillcats to 75-52 Win at OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. – The Rogers State women's basketball team outscored Oklahoma Panhandle State, 22-8, in the second period to pull away for a 75-52 win on Thursday at the Oscar Williams Field House.
 
Holding a 19-18 edge after one period, RSU started the second period with a 10-0, including seven points to start by Natasha Kindred. The junior forward started with three straight layups and was fouled on the final one with 7:46 left in the half. With the made free throw, the Hillcats gained a 26-18 advantage. The lead grew to double digits with a Courtney Smith three at the 6:51 mark for a 29-18 score. Smith stayed hot from deep, hitting two more triples for a 35-23 score with 2:46 left in the half. Kami Bunch scored four points and Rachel Block added two points as RSU went up 41-26 at the break.
 
The Hillcats continued to roll in the second half going up by 21 points at 50-29 after a Bunch trey midway through the third period. After the third quarter, RSU held a 59-38 edge.
 
In the four period, the Hillcats gained their largest lead at 68-40 with 4:08 and cruised to the 75-52 win.
 
Kindred continued her strong play with a game-high 16 points and five rebounds. Courtney Smith tied a career high with 15 points going 4-for-5 shooting from three-point range. Bunch hit double figures with 11 points and tallied a game-high eight assists.
 
Nine Hillcats played in the game with all nine scoring. The bench totaled 30 points. With the balanced attack, RSU shot 44 percent (22-50) from the field and 60 percent (9-15) from three-point distance. In the first half, the Hillcats finished at 56 percent (14-25) from the field and 85.7 percent (6-7) from three.
 
RSU was strong defensively holding the Aggies to 29.5 percent (18-61) from the field, including 24.1 percent (7-29) in the second half. The defense limited Tatyana Bell, who came into the game averaging 15.6 points per game, to six points in 2-for-11 shooting. OPSU was paced by Charron Johnson with 11 points and eight rebounds.
