Hillcats Close Season with 2-1 Win on Senior Day

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The Rogers State women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday (Oct. 29) at Soldier Field as five Hillcat seniors capped their careers with a victory.

Junior Suvannah Melton sent the Hillcat seniors out on top with her game-winning tally in the 79th minute. She scored from a few yards right in front of the goal on a cross from Marlaina Trahant from the right corner to put the navy and red up, 2-1, late in the contest.

RSU gained an early lead, 1-0, in the season finale as Alexis Pryor scored on an impressive strike from the right wing, beating the OC goalkeeper to the far post in the 15th minute of action. Senior Taylor Neubecker had the assist on the Pryor goal.

The Eagles tied the score at 1-1 in the 29th minute when Jen Atherton put in an OC goal. Darrian Palacios picked up the assist as her cross into the box was sent in by Atherton.

The score remained 1-1 after the first 45 minutes with the shots close at 8-5. In the second period, OC held an 11-3 edge in shots due to a strong wind aiding some long attempts.

Taylor Stover finished her sophomore campaign with a 10- saves performance and the one goal in 90 minutes. For the season, Stover tallied 123 saves, only four off the school record of 127 saves achieved by Bailey Lynn in 2009.

It was the final game for five RSU seniors. Amanda Jones, Courtney Tucker, Korie Martin, Paige Pontarolo and Taylor Neubecker were recognized before the game and all five started in their final appearance in the navy and red.

The Hillcats (6-9-3, 2-9-3) finished with the best season since 2012 and improved by five wins from a season ago. RSU placed sixth in the Heartland Conference and went 4-0 in nonconference play, its first time undefeated in nonconference play since the inaugural season in 2007.
