CLAREMORE, Okla. – Despite outshooting the opposition, 29-11, the Rogers State men's soccer team couldn't find the game-winning goal and settled for a 1-1 double-overtime tie against William Jewell on Tuesday afternoon at Soldier Field.
A back pass ended up over the head of Hillcats' goalkeeper
Cody Gammill for an own goal putting the Cardinals in front 1-0 just 5:31 into the match.
RSU's
Dylan Beaird evened the score in the 12th minute behind a great individual effort. The senior dribbled past two defenders and his sliding shot attempt slipped around WJC goalkeeper Joe Keeven into the left corner for his Heartland Conference-leading, seventh goal of the season.
The Hillcats had a multitude of chances to take the lead in the second stanza but couldn't find the back of the net.
Niall Masterson gave RSU its first chance of the second frame only to have Keeven come up with the save to keep the score knotted. The Hillcats pounded the goal in the first 20 minutes after intermission with eight shots.
Danko Kenjic and
Kevin Howard each fired shots that were near misses in the final 10 minutes of the game, sending the contest into overtime. It marked the first extra-time game this season for the Hillcats.
In extra time, RSU had three chances highlighted by a Kenjic free kick that Keeven made a diving save to extend the match.
In the final overtime period, RSU outshot the Cardinals 4-1 but WJC held on for the tie as the Hillcats pushed their unbeaten streak to six games.
Rogers State (5-1-1) returns to action Saturday as the Hillcats travel to John Brown for a 7:30 kickoff.
