Diamond Cats End Skid with Split at Newman

WICHITA, Kan.Travis Teague pitched five innings of one-hit ball from the bullpen helping the Rogers State baseball team snap a seven-game skid winning 3-2 in game two of a doubleheader split at Newman University Friday after the Jets claimed game one 4-3.

Teague picked up his first win of the season holding Newman scoreless securing the win while Alex Cochran led the offense with four hits and two runs in the twin bill.

GAME ONE

The top of the Jets' lineup proved the difference in the opening game as Tyler Bugner and Mitchell Beaudreau combined for all four Newman runs going 4-for-5 from the plate.

Bugner singled to start the bottom of first and moved to third on a stolen base and passed ball before crossing the plate for a 1-0 lead on Beaudreau's RBI single. Beaudreau tripled scoring Bugner in the third and came around on a double extending the Newman lead to 3-0.

RSU cut the deficit to 3-1 as Blake Gipson singled to left starting the fourth and later scored on a groundout. The Hillcats got another run back in the fifth as Joe Crow and Cochran singled opening the frame. Caleb Kohlmeyer drove Crow home on a sharp single getting RSU within one 3-2.

After the Jets added a run in the fifth, RSU entered the seventh trailing 4-2 when J.P Seifried hit a lead-off single. Seifried scored an unearned run closing the gap to 4-3 but the rally fell short as Newman's starter John Branum stranded the tying run at first getting the complete-game victory.

Branum struck out eight in seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits, all of which were singles. Mason Marquette took the loss for the Hillcats giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out four in the six-inning complete game.

RSU lost for the first time this season when recording more hits than its opponents entering the contest a perfect 10-0 in such instances.

GAME TWO

The Hillcats wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the first inning as Cochran started with an infield single. Kohlmeyer moved him to third dropping a single into right center and Cochran stole home sliding under the tag giving RSU an early 1-0 advantage.

RSU scratched another run across in the third getting a two-out bunt single from Chase Knott. The junior reached second on a balk and scored when Kohlmeyer lifted a single to left giving the Hillcats a 2-0 lead.

The Jets evened the score with two unearned runs on a bases-loaded single by Garrett Thomas with no outs in the bottom of the fourth as RSU starter Kyle Duncan ran into trouble. He escaped the jam getting Newman to ground into a double play keeping the score tied 2-2.

Cochran helped the Hillcats regain a one-run lead in the fifth legging-out another infield single with one out. After Knott was hit by a pitch, Kohlmeyer loaded the bases singling over the pitcher's head. Gipson tallied a sacrifice fly bringing Cochran home putting RSU ahead 3-2.

Teague made the lead stand throwing five scoreless innings in relief of Duncan to get the win and end the losing streak for the Diamond Cats.

Kohlmeyer finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate while Cochran added two hits and two runs for RSU. Knott provided two hits as the trio combined for seven of the team's nine hits.
