Softball Cats Complete Sweep Against Hilltoppers, 4-2

CLAREMORE, Okla.-The Rogers State softball team registered a three-game Heartland Conference sweep over St. Edward's on Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 victory at the Diamond Sports Complex.

The Hillcats registered nine hits en route to their fifth-straight win and first conference sweep of the season.

The Hilltoppers dented the scoreboard in the top of the first with a RBI single by Kendall Lucas. The lead was short-lived as the Hillcats answered in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with a full-count two-run home run blasted over the right field fence by senior Candace Monigold.

St. Edward's knotted the score in the third as Lucas drove in her second run of the day with a single into shallow right field. RSU threatened in the bottom of the frame but left the bases loaded to end the inning.

In the sixth, Yolanda Rios doubled into the left-center field gap and Kassie Brugmann followed with a double down the left field line. Rios moved to third on the play and scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. With two outs, Jamie Kowalick ripped a single up the middle to send Brugmann home, giving RSU the 4-2 lead.

Rios faced the minimum in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Hillcats. The senior hurler registered the complete-game victory, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.

Katelyn Klug was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs, two earned, on nine hits while fanning four.

Carley Conley and Kowalick led the Hillcats with two hits apiece.

Rogers State (9-20, 4-8 HC) returns to action on Tuesday at home against Northeastern State. The doubleheader is slated for 5 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
