Kowalick's Walk-Off Salvages Hillcat Split with Gorillas

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Freshman Brooklyne Harbert got her first career victory for the Rogers State softball team aided by a walk-off single from sophomore newcomer Jamie Kowalick in a 6-5 win in game two of a doubleheader with Pittsburg State salvaging a split after dropping the opener 9-2 Tuesday at the Diamond Sports Complex.

The Fountain, Colo., native Harbert pitched 10.1 innings on the day after finishing the first game in relief of starter Yolanda Rios allowing just two earned runs on nine hits.

Game One

The Gorillas broke open a scoreless game posting four runs in both the third and fourth innings for a commanding 8-1 lead chasing Rios after 3.2 innings of work on a chilled afternoon. Pitt State drew four walks in the fourth, including three with the bases loaded, haunting RSU.

The Hillcats scored once in the third when Carley Conley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded but left three runners on base when the frame ended. That proved the story for RSU in game one as it left 12 runners stranded and it deserted someone on base in all but the first inning. Taran Threet added an RBI single in the fifth making the score 8-2.

Pitt State scored once more in the sixth off Harbert and closed the game with a decisive 9-2 victory behind Samantha Grove's complete game as she remained a perfect 4-0 on the season scattering six hits over seven innings.

Threet and Cailin Simpson had two hits for the Hillcats in the loss.

Game Two

RSU quickly turned things around in the second game of the doubleheader scoring first in the second inning as Makenzie Kirk scored on an error for an early 1-0 lead.

The Hillcats extended the lead to 4-0 in the third tallying four hits started with a Simpson double. Candace Monigold followed with a high-arching blast over the right field fence for her first home run of the season as she kept alive her on-base streak at all 11 games this season.

The Gorillas cut the deficit in half 4-2 scoring twice in the sixth on a two-run home run by Tiffany Brown, who finished the game 3-of-4 with four RBI.

Three-straight singles to start the bottom of the sixth for RSU put the Hillcats ahead 5-2 with Simpson providing an RBI single to the right-center gap. The drive scored Katie Ellington, who reached on a bunt single to start the frame.

Pitt State fought its way back in the seventh taking advantage of two RSU errors while recording three hits to even the score 5-5. Brown came through with a clutch, two-run single for the Gorillas after the Hillcats had two outs already in the bag.

Kirk led off a tied bottom of the seventh reaching first base on a hit-by-pitch and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harbert. Kelby Fritz entered as a pinch runner for Kirk and advanced to third as Ellington dropped down another perfect bunt single.

Kowalick stepped to the plate and provided the heroics for Rogers State driving a single down the left-field line scoring Fritz as the winning run in a 6-5 victory giving Harbert her first win in a Hillcat uniform.

Harbert pitched the complete game allowing seven hits, all singles, improving to 1-2 on the season while Brown took the loss in the circle for the Gorillas pitching 3.1 innings in relief of starter Haleigh Sills.

Kowalick finished game two 3-of-5 from the plate while Simpson, Monigold, and Ellington all added two hits.

Rogers State (3-8) heads back to Texas for its Heartland Conference debut at former Sooner Athletic Conference foe Lubbock Christian for a three-game series starting with a Friday doubleheader at 2 p.m.
