RSU Men Clip Aggies 79-72, Win Sixth Straight

LAWTON, Okla. – The Rogers State men's basketball team picked up its sixth-consecutive victory leading all but four minutes en route to a 79-72 win on the road at Cameron Saturday afternoon at Aggie Gym.

In a game that featured six ties and 12 lead changes, the Hillcats had four players reach double-figure scoring and dominated the glass for the road win to close the non-conference slate.

DesJuan Newton opened the scoring for the Hillcats draining a three pointer on the first possession of the game as RSU raced out to a quick 7-0 lead capped by a Corey Ayala layup.

The Aggies came right back scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take an 11-10 advantage on their home floor and extended the lead to 14-12 before the Hillcats overcame the deficit to regain a 19-14 advantage with another 7-0 run.

The teams traded leads until RSU was able to maintain a slim margin heading into the halftime break ahead 44-41 closing the frame on a 7-2 run highlighted by a dunk from Ayala on Donald Moore's pass.

After Cameron knocked down a three starting the second half and added a layup moving in front 46-44, the Hillcats responded with a deep ball from Ayala kick-starting a 12-3 run that pushed the momentum in their favor taking control of the game, 56-49.

The Aggies cut the deficit down as low as three, 58-55, but RSU remained poised throughout the final 10 minutes of the second half pushing its margin to as many as 10 points and secured its sixth-consecutive victory winning 79-72.

Newton put the finishing touches on the afternoon reaching double-figures with a two-handed, alley-oop from Ayala with 48 seconds remaining. The senior finished with 14 points matching Moore for the team lead. Frederico Santos added a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double while Ayala chipped in 12 shooting a perfect 5-for-5.

Deondre Ray led four Aggies in double figures with a game-high 19 points hitting four from behind the arc as Cameron converted 10-of-22 from downtown in the loss.

RSU (6-2 overall) has a quick turnaround continuing its season-long, five-game road stretch opening Heartland Conference play at Dallas Baptist Monday at 4 p.m. The game can be heard live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
