Lions Outlast Hillcats, 74-59

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State women's basketball team fell to Heartland Conference opponent University of Arkansas-Fort Smith, 74-59, on Saturday afternoon at the Claremore Expo.

The Hillcats used a 14-2 run to take an eight-point lead with 11:26 to play in the first half. However, the Lion battled back witha 7-0 run to tie the game with five minutes to play in the half. UAFS used the momentum to outscore the Hillcats 12-6 over the final five minutes of the frame, taking a 30-24 lead into the locker room at intermission.

RSU opened the second stanza with a 7-0 run to regain the lead but once again the Lions had an answer as they used a 15-1 spurt to push their advantage to 13 points. UAFS led the rest of the way. RSU was able to cut the deficit to three points with nine minutes to play thanks to an impressive showing by Katy Harsen who scored eight points in the Cat's 10-0 run. The Lions refused to give up the advantage, regaining a double digit lead with five minutes to play.

Harsen led the Hillcats with 22 points and Clarissa Cannon tallied a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. RSU tallied an 84.4 shooting percentage at the free throw line but shot just 25.9 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from behind the arc.

UAFS (4-12, 4-6 HC) was led in scoring by Brittany Holbert with 13 points while Candice Followwell added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Lions edged the Hillcats on the boards, 47-40.

Rogers State (5-12, 2-9 HC) returns to the hardwood on Thursday as the Hillcats host St. Edwards at the Claremore Expo. The game is set for 5:30 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live along with live audio on RSU Radio 91.3 FM.
