ABILENE, Texas - Katy Harsen set the Rogers State women's basketball single-game scoring record with 27 points in the Hillcats, 61-56, Heartland Conference loss to McMurry (Texas) on Thursday evening at Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks never trailed in the contest, clinging to a single digit lead for most of the contest. The teams traded buckets to start the game but McMurry used a 12-2 run to stretch the lead to 18-8 with less than nine minutes to play in the first half. Harsen cut the RSU deficit to five points, with an 8-1 run, draining a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws. RSU cut the War Hawk lead to four with 28 seconds to play but McMurry scored the final bucket of the half to take a six point lead into intermission. Harsen had 13 of the Hillcats 26 first half points.
Despite outscoring the War Hawks in the second stanza, 30-29, the Hillcats were unable to come away with the win. RSU cut the lead to one point with consecutive layups by Breanna Burford with 13 minutes to play but McMurry answered with an 8-0 run to keep the Hillcats from the lead. RSU continued to battle keeping themselves in the game down to the wire, trailing by four points with 20 seconds to play. However, a made free throw by Taylor Russell and a jumper by Keshia Collins in the final second of the game sealed the win for McMurry.
Clarissa Cannon joined Harsen in double digit scoring with 10 points and nine rebounds. The Hillcats won the battle on the boards, 41-34. Collins led McMurry in scoring with 21 points while Ana Sominguez and Sierra Maykus poured in 11 points apiece.
Rogers State (1-3, 0-1) returns to conference action on Saturday as the Hillcats travel to Austin, Texas to take on St. Edward's at 1 p.m. The game will be carried on the Hillcat Network at www.rsuhillcats.com/live.
