FORT SMITH, Ark. – Rogers State men's basketball forced overtime Friday night against Henderson State inside the Stubblefield Center as part of the UAFS Lions Classic but the Reddies of HSU came away with victory 93-87.
RSU shot just 25 percent in the overtime period as HSU outscored the Hillcats 14-8 in the extra stanza.
The Hillcats trailed by 15 points just a minute into the second period but RSU put together a 14-7 run over the next 4:20 of action to trim the deficit to eight. A traditional three point play by senior forward Damien Hooks trimmed the HSU lead to six points with 13 minutes remaining. The bucket fueled the Hillcats as Robinson Odoch Opong connected on a wing trey with 8:52 to go putting RSU down by one.
The back and forth affair continued until a layup by Cory Ayala with 1:07 gave RSU its first lead of the second half but a missed jumper by the sophomore guard with 22 second remaining that would have given the Cats a four point lead proved costly. HSU's Aaron Harwell drained a jumper from the right corner with four seconds to go pushing the game into overtime and the eventual victory for the Reddies.
RSU trailed 45-31 at the half as the Hillcats shot 34 percent from the field including going just 0-of-5 from behind the arc.
Henderson State (3-0) was led in scoring by Melvin Haynes with 24 points as three other Reddies reached double-figure scoring. HSU shot 56.7 percent from the field and made just four 3-pointers.
Coach Justin Barkley's squad out rebounded the Reddies 38-33 as Damien Hooks registered a double-double with 12 boards to go with a game high 29 points. Deran Banton came off the bench to tally 25 points for RSU while Opong finished with 15.
RSU shot 42.9 percent from the field and made just 4-of-16 from 3-point range but connected on 82.9 percent from the charity stripe.
