TULSA, Okla. – With eight new faces suiting up for the first time in the Hillcat red and blue, the Rogers State women's basketball team was unable to top a familiar exhibition foe in the University of Tulsa as the Golden Hurricane came away victorious, 84-52.
The Hillcat women trailed by ten at the halftime break 36-26 but the Golden Hurricane opened the second half with a 13-0 run in the first 4:51 of action. Mikaila Newton hit a three-point to trim the deficit to 20 but an 11-1 run by TU built the lead to60-30 with 12:14 remaining. The Golden Hurricane closed the game out 24-22 over the Hillcats for the 84-52, RSU loss.
Newton tallied 10 points for the Hillcats while Taylor Jeffs totaled 10 as the duo led RSU in scoring. Kelsee Grovey tallied 20 points to lead all scorers as she made 6-of-11 from the field for the Golden Hurricane.
RSU scored the opening basket of the game on a three-pointer by DaNara Day just 17 seconds into the game. The Cats and Golden Hurricane were tied at 10-10 with 13:24 remaining before TU went on a 11-1 run over the next five minutes of play.
The Hillcats shot 24.5 percent from the field while attempting 26 shots from behind the arc knocking down seven. The Cats totaled 10 assists against the NCAA Division I opponent as Katy Harsen led with six assists with four steals. Clarissa Cannon tallied seven points and seven rebounds despite seeing only 17 minutes of action due to foul trouble in the first half.
TU outrebounded the Hillcats 52-39 and shot 42.6 percent from the field while hitting 32 percent from three-point range.
Rogers State will open the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 9 versus Ecclesia College as part of Hillcat Homecoming at the Claremore Expo.
