Evangels Upset No. 9 Hillcat Men, 93-84

CLAREMORE, Okla. – No. 9 Rogers State suffered its first back-to-back loss of the season Saturday evening inside the Claremore as Mid-America Christian upset the Hillcats 93-84 on 53.8 percent shooting from the field.

The Evangels controlled the glass and the paint pulling in 41 rebounds to RSU's 36 while outscoring RSU in the lane 44-34.

The score was tied nine times over the course of the 40 minutes with the lead changing hands eight times. The ninth tie came on what fueled a 6-0 run by MACU's Charlie Shorter as the senior guard flipped the game putting the Evangels ahead 75-71 with 6:30 to go.  Made free throws by Shorter and Camilo Valencia pushed the MACU lead to 93-81 with 24 seconds, the largest advantage for the visitors.

A corner three-pointer by J.C. Hartzler put the score at its final tally, 93-84.

Shorter led all scorers with 26 points as Angelo Lewis added 24 joining two other Evangels in double-digit scoring. MACU (6-4, 1-0) made just two free throws, both in the first half, going 2-of-11 from behind the arc.

Donald Williams led RSU in scoring with 22 points playing a team high 37 minutes. Ken Holdman added 16 points, Alex Ewings 15 and Justynn Hammond came off the bench for 14 points before fouling out in just 16 minutes of play. Freshman J.C. Hartzler played 35 minutes scoring 10 points.

Rogers State (12-4, 0-2) will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. as No. 1 Oklahoma Baptist comes to the Claremore Expo for Sooner Athletic Conference action.
