Softball Cats Sweep Lady Evangels

CLAREMORE, Okla. - The Rogers State softball team earned its first Sooner Athletic Conference sweep of the spring with two victories against Mid-America Christian (Okla.) on Thursday evening at Hillcat Complex.

The Cats escaped with the win in the opener, tallying a 4-3 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh. In the nightcap, RSU surged past the Lady Evangels, registering 10 hits and earning a 7-1 victory. Freshman Laura Fleck picked up both wins in the pitching circle as she tossed 11 innings over the two contests.

GAME ONE

The Hillcats relied on late-inning heroics in the opener as they rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 4-3 victory over MACU.

Katrina Loy led off the bottom of the seventh and reached base on a bobble by the shortstop. Nikki Keck followed with a walk to put the game winning run at the plate. Megan Williams hit a sacrifice bunt but reached first on an error by Kayla Yager who dropped the ball at first base, allowing Loy to score and put runners on the corners. Kaitlin McCool followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3. With two outs, Shona Guerrero singled up the middle and Taran Threet followed with a double to right-center field bringing the game-winning run home.

The Lady Evangels jumped in front 2-0 in the top of the second with an RBI double by Tiffany Sanchez and a pass ball that allowed Jackie Hilterbran to score.

RSU cut the deficit in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by Guerrero. However, the Lady Evangels tacked on a run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single by designated hitter Erica Love before the Hillcats walked-off with the win.

Guerrero was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with one RBI.

Fleck registered the complete-game victory and allowed three runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Amber Tinney suffered the loss, tossing 6.2 innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO 

The Hillcats plated runs in each of the first five innings and rolled past the Lady Evangels for the 7-1 victory in game two.

McCool got thing started in the nightcap as she led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single and stole second base. Guerrero belted a one-out RBI single down the left field line to send McCool home and give the Cats a 1-0 advantage.

RSU tacked on a pair of runs in the second frame as Justine Kodesh scored on a wild pitch and Ashlie Fauchier hit a RBI double. Loy doubled down the left field line in the third to send Linsey Curtis and Fleck home, giving the Hillcats a 5-0 lead.

MACU scored its lone run of the game with a RBI groundout by Brittany Prandy in the top of the fourth. However, the Cats answered with an RBI groundout by Guerrero in the bottom of the inning.

Loy scored on an RBI single by McCool in the fifth to round out the scoring for the Cats. 

Fleck (23-6) earned the victory, tossing four innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits with one strikeout. Alex Koonce tossed the final three scoreless innings with two strikeouts.

McCool led the Cats in game two, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and three runs scored.

Rogers State (31-8, 4-4) will return to action on Tuesday with a twin bill against No. 11 St. Gregory's at Hillcat Complex with first pitch at 2 p.m.
